Riyadh was recently rocked by three explosions. A Saudi spokesman, Adel al-Jubeir, described the suicide attacks as a "massive jolt." Vice President Richard Cheney responded to the bombings by saying that "the only sure way to security ... is to go eliminate the terrorists." The problem is much more complex than that.
The United States recently waged a successful war in Iraq, thereby removing Saddam Hussein and his followers from power. One of the objectives of the United States was to introduce democracy into that nation. It is consistent with the U.S. national interest to promote democracy throughout the world.
