Article: La Crosse wins two tourism awards

The La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has landed two top state tourism marketing awards.

Despite competing against Wisconsin's largest cities, La Crosse is the only community to receive two Wisconsin Trailblazer awards in 1999 from the Wisconsin Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus.

"I think that lends a lot of credibility to what we're doing here," said Tom Tourville, executive director of the La Crosse organization.

Tourville said Friday that tourism brings in about $151 million to the area each year, employing nearly 5,000 people and providing about $9 million in tax support.

"Tourism is alive and well," he said. "It's big business here."
