History

In 1955, six visionary New England governors realized that New England's future hopes rested with higher education. Against a backdrop of deep economic uncertainty and exploding college enrollments fueled by the GI Bill, these governors committed their states to the pursuit of educational excellence and the sharing of educational resources. At their request, the U.S. Congress authorized the New England Higher Education Compact and established the New England Board of Higher Education as administrator of the compact. By 1957, all the New England states had enacted legislation committing them to the New England Higher Education Compact.
