Article: THE ARAB WORLD; Report bodes ill for region's children

Hady Amr, primary author of a recent UNICEF report looking at the state of children in the Arab world, says he hopes to deliver a `wake up call' to Arab governments to confront the needs of their people.

The report, entitled The State of the Arab Child, exposes several problems that the Arab world is expected to face in the next 50 years, Amr, a consultant to UNICEF MENARO, told The Daily Star in an interview. Such problems include a high population growth and disparity between men and women.

The results of the document have shown that the percentage of male and female literacy in Arab countries is 73 and 49 percent respectively, as opposed to 82 and 66 percent in developing countries. In ...
