The Black Panther paper

(NNPA)--Every organization needs its own voice. The NAACP has The Crisis. The National Urban League has Opportunity. The original Nation of Islam had Muhammad Speaks and the modern NOI has The Final Call.

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, formed in Oakland, Calif. in 1966, created its own voice. It was appropriately called, The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service. The paper's first edition is dated April 25, 1967. It started as a monthly newspaper before going weekly the following year. It folded in 1980, when the BPP was on its last gasp. Splinter groups have since tried to revive the paper.
