I have to admit I'm not a big fan of rock `n' roll, and hence, Lenny Kravitz's music doesn't interest me much.
But after reading ESSENCE's February cover story on him, the article left an indelible mark on me: African-Americans must reclaim what is rightfully ours.
Rock `n' roll music, just like rap is today, was the brainchild of hardworking African-American musicians, such as Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Little Richard. They pioneered rock `n' roll in the 1950s. But men like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the Beatles took it and claimed it as their own.
