American Legacy scores in tough media market

In today's crowded magazine marketplace, the odds of survival are slim for any new publication. For an African-American magazine, the path to success is even more perilous. Despite a recent flurry of highly publicized launches, magazines for Black readers continue to struggle.

But Rodney J. Reynolds, president of RJR Communications, is proving that it is possible to succeed. In 1995, he launched American Legacy, the quarterly magazine celebrating African-American history and culture, in a partnership with the American Heritage division of Forbes Inc. Nearly three years later, the magazine has emerged as an unmitigated success.
