Women call for act on ending domestic violence

ZIMBABWE--Police in Zimbabwe tend to treat complaints about domestic abuse as cases of common assault, for which one pays only a small fine.

Now women are campaigning for a tough law to end the violence.

Zimbabwean women, worried about the continuing increase in domestic violence, are calling for an act that will compel society to take the problem more seriously.

Proposals by non-governmental organizations are being sent to the Zimbabwe Women's Lawyers' Association, which is helping to draft the proposed legislation.
