Poor Americans Want Welfare Reform.
Conspiciously absent from welfare reform debate have been the voices of those most likely to be affected by it - the poor themselves. To articulate their concerns, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies commissioned a comprehensive nationwide survey to find out who the poor are and what they think about the current welfare system and about proposals to reform it.
While popular debate concentrates on people who do not work and who live "at taxpayers' expense," the survey found that most poor families in this country have at least one worker and receiver very little assistance from the government. Of survey respondents, 69 percent live in ...
