IN 1992, WHEN LEADERSHIP AND THE NEW SCIENCE (Berrett-Koehler Publications) was first published, I described it as a foray into a new land, a map-clear in places, vague in others-that would require further pioneers to describe and elaborate on its features and meanings. Hundreds of thousands of people responded to the call to think differently about organizations, leadership, change, and chaos. Others came forward to say they had been thinking about these ideas long before Leadership and the New Science, but were grateful to find them presented in one volume.
