FILIPINO CULTURAL IDENTITY AND COLONIALISM: AN IMMIGRANT'S REFLECTIONS
Maria (not her real name) was a first grade student who had been in the United States for only four months. We first met when I was a volunteer teacher in her class. When she saw me, she asked me "Ikaw ba ang teacher ngayon?" (Are you the teacher today?). I replied that I was the substitute teacher. Maria replied: "Ay, mas gusto ko ang teacher na puti" (Oh, I would prefer a teacher who is white). Startled by her response, I asked her why she felt that way. Without hesitation, Maria said very proudly, "Because I am American."
My conversation with Maria served as a catalyst for my reflections on my cultural heritage. While ...
