News and Views: Professor Manning Marable Challenges Columbia's Record in Hiring Black Faculty
One of the major issues affecting universities in the United States is the question of autonomy of their individual schools. Harvard University, for example, has always operated on a tradition of "each tub on its own bottom," a practice that departing President Neil Rudenstine has been trying to reverse for the past 10 years.
A side aspect of this issue is whether one judges the performance of the university in any of its various endeavors by examining the whole or simply its individual parts.
