Let's say hypothetically that the average SAT racial scoring gap between whites and blacks entering the freshman class at a particular prestigious four-year college is 15 percent. In fact, the 15 percent figure is essentially correct for most elite colleges in the United States.
Despite this SAT performance deficit, it turns out that blacks are now graduating from this college at a rate of more than 90 percent, only slightly below the graduation rate for whites.
This apparent inconsistency between SAT scores and graduation rates suggests several possible explanations:
