News and Views: Black Graduation Rates at the Nation's Highest-Ranked Colleges and Universities

Statistics on the high graduation rates for black students at many of the nation's highest-ranked universities and liberal arts colleges largely defeat the thesis that African Americans admitted under affirmative action guidelines are unable to handle the coursework at our most prestigious institutions of higher learning.

Nationwide, blacks continue to have extremely low rates of college completion. Only 37 percent of all black students who enrolled as freshmen in the years 1986 to 1989 graduated within six years. For whites, the overall graduation rate was 59 percent, or 22 percentage points ...
