Critics of remedial education at the college level charge that huge amounts of money are being wasted in providing instruction to students who are basically incapable of handling a college-level curriculum and who, perhaps, should not be in college at all. Because African-American students are almost twice as likely to need remedial courses as are whites, curtailment of remedial programs will severely reduce the number of black college students.
