News and Views: Black Students and Remedial Education.
Critics of remedial education at the college level charge that huge amounts of money are being wasted in providing instruction to students who are basically incapable of handling a college-level curriculum and who, perhaps, should not be in college at all. Because African-American students are almost twice as likely to need remedial courses as are whites, curtailment of remedial programs will severely reduce the number of black college students. Yet, because whites in the United States outnumber blacks by a ratio of seven to one, far more whites benefit from remedial education than do blacks. But few whites realize how they hurt ...
