Black business remains a trivial part of American capitalism. But the evidence is strong that when black business people succeed big time they are almost invariably backed up by a bachelor's degree or better.

Nowhere is the unequal status of blacks and whites more evident than in the world of business and in the ownership of capital. The Census Bureau reports that in 1992 there were 620,912 black-owned businesses in the United States. Sales of all U.S. black-owned firms in 1992 combined were $32.2 billion. That year Exxon Corporation alone had sales of $116 billion.
