Vital Signs: Good News! Latest Figures Show a Slight Uptick in the Graduation Rates of African-American College Students

In 1997 the nationwide college graduation rate for black students stood at an appalling rate of 39 percent.(*) This was 20 percentage points below the rate for white students. In 1997 black graduation rates improved slightly from a year earlier, erasing a slight decline during the 1995-to-1996 period. But over the eight-year period 1989 to 1997, black men improved their graduation rates from 28 percent to 34 percent. During this period the graduation rates for black women showed much stronger gains. They improved from 34 percent to 43 percent.
