The Antislavery Views of President John Quincy Adams
A GOOD CASE can be made that no other man in the history of the United States was more qualified for the presidency than John Quincy Adams. As every schoolchild knows, he was the son of the nation's second President, John Adams. John Quincy Adams was also a U.S. senator from Massachusetts and an ambassador to Holland, Prussia, Portugal, Russia, and England. Adams successfully negotiated the treaty that ended the War of 1812. He later served as secretary of state during the Monroe administration. While sitting in the U.S. Senate, Adams was named Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University.
