Vital Signs: Statistical Blip or Disturbing Trend? A Drop in the Nationwide Graduation Rates of African-American College Students

In 1996 the nationwide graduation rate for black students stood at an appalling rate of 38 percent.(*) This was 21 percentage points below the rate for white students. Even more disturbing is the fact that, for the first time in six years, nationwide graduation rates for African-American students have fallen. The graduation rate for black men dropped from 35 percent in 1995 to 33 percent in 1996.
