News and Views: Educational Aspirations of Children of Black Caribbean. Immigrants Surrender to the Forces of the Ghetto
Black immigrants from the West Indies have higher incomes and lower poverty rates and are far more likely to be successful entrepreneurs than are American blacks. Cultural differences in their homeland, which are transported to the United States, probably explain much of the differences. But after a generation or two of living in American inner cities, the children of today's Caribbean immigrants tend to be burdened with the educational failings and impaired motivations common to the American ghetto.
