News and Views: Black Faculty Diversification; Duke Puts Its Money Where. Its Mouth Is
Many universities talk the talk of faculty diversification. But oftentimes they throw up their hands and fall back on the age-old, and not always credible, "no blacks in the Ph.D. pipeline" defense when their numbers of black faculty hires fail to meet their stated goals. For years Duke University said all the right things but was unsuccessful in achieving significant progress. But when the university budgeted an annual $500,000 for the express purpose of hiring new black faculty members, the numbers started to rise. Over the past three years, the number of blacks teaching at Duke has risen by 40 percent.
