OUTLOOK ON WASHINGTON: Bumpy Road Ahead for Remedial Education.

Many colleges and universities in states facing budget constraints are considering reducing or eliminating remedial courses, which could hinder poor and minority students from obtaining college degrees, according to a report released by the American Council on Education.

"If you eliminate these courses, you are going to cut off access to college," said David Merkowitz, a spokesman for the Washington-based organization. "This will have a disproportionate impact on low-income and minority students who tend to come from weaker schools where they haven't been adequately prepared for college."
