Although Malaquias Montoya had been drawing and painting since he was a small child, he never took his art seriously. He never thought of it as a future. But in the early 60s, while he was attending college, all that changed.
Now a renowned artist and a professor of Chicano studies at the University of California-Davis, Montoya remembers the impact on his art and on his life of the civil rights movement that was taking shape in the South, a movement that attacked the nation's conscience, creating unforgettable heroes and villains, all captured on television, impossible to ignore.
