Event reaches public in Medicine Hat
MEDICINE HAT -- Native Awareness Week in Medicine Hat reaches more than the non-Native audience it was first designed for, say organizers. The event touches many First Nations students and non-students, said Debbie Lloyde, a Cree from Saddle Lake.
"It is equally important to educate non-Native people about Native culture as it is to instill pride in Native culture," she said.
The city-wide event took place May 6 to 10 and was sponsored by the provincial Native education project and the Metis Local Number 8. Opening ceremonies at the Saamis Tipi site included a flawless performance by hoop dancer Delvin Kennedy and addresses by Elders. Scheduled tipi ...
