Calgary plans to count its Native population

CALGARY -- Aboriginal people in Calgary this year have, for the first time, the opportunity to stand up and be counted. Literally.

At the request of the Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee, Mayor Al Duerr and city council agreed to include a question about Aboriginal origin in this year's annual civic census.

"We would like to know exactly how many First Nations people are living in the Calgary area," said Doug Vivier, committee chairman.

The information, he explained, will help to determine if community and social services provided to Aboriginal people in Calgary are adequate.
