MY MOTHER ALWAYS HAD an ailment. Her head hurts, her heart beats too fast, her feet hurt. They became so common place that, we, and even she, ruled them out as anything meaningful. Growing up in rural Jamaica, my mother learned that between home remedies and prayer, she could live forever.

To describe my mother as full of life would be an understatement. At 51 years old, she was at the peak of her life.
