URINARY tract infections, (UTIs) are usually caused by the bacteria escherichia coli (E. Coli). UTIs occur mostly in women, but also affect men particularly after the insertion of a catheter or in incidences of enlarged prostate.

The connection between cranberry juice and UTI has always been known. The belief was that the acidity of the juice cleansed dates urinary tract. A recent study, however, suggest that it is not the acidity of the cranberry juice that helps in warding off urinary tract infections, but the red pigment (proanthocyanidins).
