Art Basel Miami Beach was an unqualified success, having completed a four-day run Dec. 5-8 that brought record crowds and phenomenal sales. But for women artists and artists of color, finding visibility at such a major event is still a challenge.

Of the 1,000 or so artists from around the world who exhibited at Art Basel - the art world's blue-chip event which drew 30,000 people to the Miami Beach Convention Center and to more than 100 area galleries - just a handful were artists of African descent (painter Odili Donald Odita and photographers Carrie Mae Weems and Mali-born Seydou Keita among them.)
