College and university presidents spend significant time in fund raising, yet most come to their positions without a development background. They therefore generally lack an understanding of the history, tradition, meaning, ethics, and organization of the fund-raising enterprise and rely instead on development staff to guide their activities. A healthy respect for the long and honorable philanthropic tradition in American higher education will enable presidents to participate more confidently, and more successfully, in this vital process.
