Article: Flint & feather the life and times of E. Pauline Johnson, Tekahionwake

HARPER FLAMINGO CANADA, 2002

In a new biography about the Aboriginal poet, writer and recitalist Pauline Johnson, author Charlotte Gray paints a vivid picture of the challenges faced by a prominent Métis woman who was well-loved all across Canada in the late 1800s and early part of the 20th century.

This tale of Johnson's life will touch the hearts of all women of mixed Aboriginal blood. Although she had a public persona unusual for both a woman and a Métis, Pauline Johnson's solitary life and the disconnection that came from not fitting into either the white or the red world was ultimately tragic. More tragic was her death from breast cancer in 1914, at the age of 52.
