Acting Like Activists: Overcoming the Missionary Position in the State University Feminist Multicultural Classroom
In the fall of 1998, I taught the course "Womanism/Feminism" in a school in which the students are largely commuters. I defined the course in a multi-dimensional manner. The course was defined in the catalogue as readings in literature concerning struggles about race in the women's movement. I felt inclined to define the women's movement as an activist enterprise. This involved imparting a sense of activism, or the feeling that people could forge a collective identity based on activity to bring about social change on social justice issues.
