So many people of all races and genders showed up to hear bell hooks speak about her new book that I was stepping over people to wedge myself in at her feet, right below the podium. bell pointed at me and told me to "sit right down" on the floor; would I argue with her? In her comically squeaky voice she calmly reassured us all that there was plenty of room, and though there wasn't, somehow there was.
