Jim Wheeler was 18 when he committed suicide, depressed and alienated after years of abuse from people who judged him for his sexual orientation instead of who he was. A talented painter and poet, Wheeler was close with his parents and six siblings. But his high school years, despite caring friends, were brutal, and even after he left his native Lebanon, Pa., to study art in Philadelphia, he continued to be traumatized. Wheeler's suicide was a tragedy, but it has galvanized a generation of activism motivated by the knowledge that Wheeler's death didn't have to happen.
