Article: Sensitization to contact allergens can begin in infancy

Denver - It's not uncommon for infants as young as 6 months old to become sensitized to contact allergens,, and the sensitivity continues to be common in older infants and young children, William L. Weston, M.D., said.
While previous studies confirmed allergic contact sensitization in children by age 5, this study indicates sensitiza-- tion occurs at an even earlier age, and it appears to be a common phenomenon.
"There appear to be some exposures in infants that nobody appreciated," said Dr. Weston, professor and chairman of the department of dermatology at University of Colorado Medical Center and professor of pediatrics at University of Colorado School of Medicine.
