As American culture becomes more diverse, it is incumbent upon schools to prepare students to become good citizens who are more tolerant of others and are able to meet the challenges of a pluralistic society. One way that public schools can teach students about citizenship is through multicultural education. Multicultural education is "an approach to teaching and learning that is based upon democratic values and beliefs and that affirms cultural pluralism within culturally diverse societies in an interdependent world" (Bennett 2003, 14).
