Disposal outside of its boundaries is an obvious necessity when New York City's Fresh Kills landfill closes. Minimizing the impact of moving out 26,000 tons/day of solid waste is the more immediate challenge.
NEW YORK CITY, which produces 26,000 tons/day of solid waste, will soon close its only remaining active landfill - Fresh Kills. As the most densely populated city in the nation, with an average of 20,000 people per square mile, New York has no plans to develop new disposal capacity within its boundaries.
