Until recently, in-office color printing was a luxury that most businesses could ill afford and made do without. Those with a competitive spirit followed a "print and distribute" model. Following this model, communications documents were conceived, designed, layed out, outsourced for printing, freighted to distribution points, and then delivered to its intended audience. This mass printing method was a costly, impersonal, and time-consuming process that, while providing the desired end result of color prints and copies, cost businesses time and profits. In many circumstances, the cost of color printing was barely offset by the newly acquired customers. Then came the digital age.
