Wynton Marsalis: Skain's Domain
It's ironic that in the 100th anniversary year of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington's birth, comes the first biography of the man who idolized him -- Wynton Marsalis, and who continues to perpetuate much of the performance of the Duke's compositions. Wynton Marsalis: Skain's Domain by jazz critic/chronicler Leslie Gourse, is essentially a prodigal-like tome of Marsalis' introduction to traditional jazz, his shunning of it for more pop-oriented music, and then a return to it after a later appreciation of Ellington and Louis Armstrong.
