The number of new courses in the metro Washington area is increasing, with Washington Golf Monthly reporting that according to the National Golf Foundation, 16 courses opened or expanded last year in Virginia and 26 were under construction, while seven opened in Maryland and 32 were under construction.
These are not private country clubs, but daily fee and municipal courses. Washington Golf Monthly calls it "the upscale daily fee invasion" on private and municipal courses in metro D.C. High-- quality, high greens fee public courses are starting to affect the attractiveness of private country clubs, where membership waiting lists are getting smaller and smaller.
