Pairing wines with summer barbecue fare: Bold red wines stand up to grilled foods

In the heart of Sonoma County wine country, residents are said to regularly open a bottle of their favorite local wine to enjoy at their summer cookout.
Red wines make a great match with summer barbecue fare, from char-grilled burgers to steaks, sausages, barbecued chicken and grilled vegetables such as peppers, corn, asparagus and wild mushrooms.
The smoky flavors of food cooked on the grill call for a wine that can stand up to hearty fare, and a spicy red Zinfandel, a big Merlot or a lush Cabernet Sauvignon are suggested.
