In February 1998, Carolene Mays was offered the opportunity to turn around the ailing newspaper, The Indianapolis Recorder. Her first reaction was stunned shock.

Her career had focused on chemical companies, including Occidental Chemical Co. and Mays Chemical Co., owned by her uncle Bill Mays, who also owns the newspaper.

"The Recorder is very important to this community and we didn't want it to go under," she said. "On the other hand, I was very concerned that I didn't have experience in print media."

She decided to take the challenge with Bill Mays' encouragement that her management and business skills would offset what she needed to learn about the print media business.
