San Francisco - One of the more than 5,000 basic fragrances used in cosmetic products is most often to blame for allergic reactions to cosmetics, said Anthony F. Fransway, M.D. at the American Academy of Dermatology's annual meeting.
With adults using an average of at least seven skin care products daily, the potential for allergies is great. In addition to fragrances, possible culprits also include preservatives, antioxidants, and sunscreen ingredients, among others.
Fragrances are added to a wide variety of topical products, from shampoos to lipsticks. Even those labeled "unscented" sometimes include a fragrance to mask the smell of chemical ingredients.
