The Coast Guard is an armed force in the Department of Transportation (DOT). (It was part of the Department of the Treasury before DOT was created in 1965.) The service was founded in 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service (RCS). The name Coast Guard was adopted in 1915.
In time of war, the Coast Guard becomes a service in the Navy. Coast Guard and RCS personnel have served in every war that our nation has fought, except for the American Revolution. The Coast Guard is our nation's oldest continuously operating maritime service. (The Navy ceased to exist for a few years in the 1790s.)
