Schools set new policies on using live animals

CLEELAND At press time, two veterinary schools had adopted new policies regarding the use of live animals as teaching tools for veterinary students.

The Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine announced Feb. 8 that it will end a terminal dog lab as an elective for third-year veterinary students in the coming academic year. The decision came after a focused year-long collaborative effort with the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS), one of the countrys oldest animal advocacy organizations.

The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine also passed a new policy on Feb. 8, which will also go into effect next fall, that no longer requires veterinary students to work ...
