Our knowledge of the sciences has expanded at an unprecedented rate. Secondary science teachers who have updated their classes have had to weigh the benefits of incorporating up-to-date research data against the drawbacks of adding to students' content load. This problem has been compounded by several factors:
1. A teacher's undergraduate science coursework may not have provided adequate preparation in the theoretical foundations of rapidly advancing, high-tech fields.
2. Modern laboratory investigations require specialized, costly equipment.
