Few newspapers can proudly claim to serve their entire state, but the Des Moines Register can - or could - for most of its history. For much of that history, the Register and its evening counterpart, the Tribune, covered Iowa and cultivated a relationship with the audience that would make today's civic journalists proud. At times the Register was ahead of the journalism curve, and at others it mirrored the industry, but regardless, its history is also Iowa's history.
