Article: Italy: Italy outperforms European average

A bit squashed the Italian paper industry performed quite well in 1999, despite further increases in energy prices. Costs were already higher in Italy than in other competitor countries. But output still grew more than the Cepi (Confederation of European Paper Industries) average, mainly due to a boost in the Italians' market share in both western and eastern Europe.

Production rose 3.8%, but the industry's turnover went up just 1.7% as producers struggled to increase prices in line with the continuous rise in raw material levels. For example, pulp, recovered paper and chemicals prices all increased over the year.
