Bacteria on the march

Mimi Culotta returned from a travel adventure with more than pictures and fond memories. A week after returning to her Lakeview home, she started feeling bad and developed a high fever. Her most memorable souvenir of this trip was a four- to six-week illness including 10 days at Mercy Hospital for intensive antibiotics.

Culotta's trip was not a safari in a malarial zone of Africa or a trip up tho Amazon River swimming with parasites. She chaperoned a weekend slumber party for her daughter Melissa and a dozen other Girl Scouts at a Northshore campsite near Covington in the 1980s.
