The New York Times forced a 27-year-old reporter to resign May 1 after discovering that the four-year veteran--on the staff of what is considered to be the nation's greatest newspaper--committed journalistic fraud.
Hired as part of the Times' effort to add African Americans to its news staff, Jayson Blair became one of the newspaper's most promising young reporters.
He filed more than 600 stories, was popular with his fellow journalists and earned promotion to the paper's national desk early on.
He's a troubled young man who admitted a drinking problem and who, after his departure from the Times, entered a hospital for treatment.
His professional sins were many, but they weren't of a degree ...
