The Royal Marines went through radical changes in the 20th century and are now playing a major role in amphibious operations. However, this was not always the case. Major General Julian Thompson discusses the RM's rocky road to prominence.
Amphibious: an out of date concept of operations, requiring no particular expertise, which is temporarily undertaken by the Royal Marines.
That appeared in the Times of 16 July 1981, as part of a satirical alphabetical list of defence terminology around the time of the Nott Defence Review of that year, probably produced by someone in the MoD.
